A simple week-by-week plan for raising a happy, healthy puppy from day one.
Your puppy’s first month sets the foundation for a lifetime of confidence and good behavior. Follow this practical roadmap for routines, sleep, potty training, feeding, socialization, and vet basics.
Most puppies start to relax within three to five days and feel properly at home by the end of the first month. Keep the first week quiet and predictable — too many visitors or outings early on slows things down rather than speeding them up.
A rough guide is one hour per month of age, so an eight-week puppy needs a break about every two hours — plus straight after waking, eating, and playing. Overnight they will need at least one trip for the first few weeks.
Straight away, carefully. The key window closes around sixteen weeks, so do not wait for the full vaccination course. Carry your puppy out to see traffic and people, and meet only healthy, fully vaccinated dogs until your vet gives the all-clear.
Short cycles: potty, a little food or training, active play, then a proper nap. Puppies sleep sixteen to twenty hours a day, so the naps matter as much as the activity — an overtired puppy looks hyperactive, not sleepy.
